Moldovan government votes draft law on reform of Prosecutor General's Office

Chisinau, 13 September /MOLDPRES/ – The Government has approved, on Friday, 12 September, the modification of mechanism of appointment of the General Prosecutor, the most important draft law on the reform of the Prosecutor's Office, the government's communication and protocol department has reported.
The project purpose is to create an independent commission within the Ministry of Justice (MJ) that will pre – select candidates for position of General Prosecutor. Further, the Superior Council of Prosecutors (CSP) may elect the General Prosecutor from the short list proposed by commission. The commission will consist of five members: Minister of Justice, an ex – prosecutor or an ex – judge, an international expert, a national expert and a representative of civil society, as well as an expert appointed by SP.
"People want us to convey a very clear message. The thief is punished in Moldova. The justice reform can start with the appointment of a true General Prosecutor, a professional, brave General Prosecutor, who will defend the interests of citizens. We need to come urgently with this initiative. The CSP has launched its own selection of Prosecutor General, we do not trust this procedure. We are coming up with a new initiative to ensure that there will be a process of pre – selection of candidates, a very transparent process, so that we all have the certainty that a future General Prosecutor will be an independent person”, stated PM Maia Sandu.
The draft law will be passed in Legislature and it is expected to be voted at the beginning of upcoming week.
Also today, the Government has decided to open 85 polling stations abroad, in uninominal constituency №50, which includes the countries of Western Europe, where it will be held new parliamentary elections on 20 October 2019, the same day as the local general elections. Thus, out of 85 polling stations organised abroad, it will be opened 27 within diplomatic missions and consular offices and 58 additional ones.
On 20 October, Moldovan citizens from 03 uninominal electoral districts: №№33, 48 and 50 will elect new MPs, after persons elected in 03 constituencies gave up their mandates. It stands for – PM Maia Sandu, Minister of Internal Affairs, Andrei Nastase and Viorel Melnic.
