Moldovan electoral body says local elections can be declared valid

Chisinau, 20 October /MOLDPRES/ - The local elections can be declared valid. Till 21:00, when all polling stations closed in Moldova, 1,174,000 people voted. The voter turnout is 41.7 per cent. The head of Central Electoral Commission (CEC), Dorin Cimil, unveiled information to this effect.   

According to Cimil, the last polling stations from the uninominal district No 50 will close in the next hour. The polling stations from Moldova ceased working at 21:00. ‘’The today’s polls were held without major incidents, able to influence the final results,’’ Cimil said.

In the Moldovan capital, the participation rate was of 36.05 per cent and most voters were women here – over 55 per cent. In Balti, about 36.11 per cent of the electors came to vote.

As for the new parliamentary elections held in four uninominal districts today, CEC’s data shows that, till 21:00, 27,000 electors voted in the district No 17, about 24,800 voters - in the district No 33. At the same time, over 1,200 people exercised their right to vote at those 25 polling stations opened in the uninominal district No 48 and 9,600 persons – in the district No 50 from abroad.

As many as 898 mayors and 11,580 councilors are to be elected at the local elections. The last general local polls took place on 14 June 2015. At the then elections, the voter turnout was 49 per cent.

After the closing of the polling stations, more electoral contenders gave news conferences and thanked the voters for support. At the same time, they asked the members of the electoral bureaus, as well as the observers to be vigilant in the process of counting the votes.
