Moldovan premier, members of National Democratic Institute discuss organization of presidential elections

Chisinau, 2 October /MOLDPRES/ - Prime Minister Ion Chicu, at a today’s videoconference, discussed with members of the National Democratic Institute (NDI) from Washington, D.C., on an mission to assess the pre-electoral situation, in the context of the presidential elections due in Moldova on 1 November 2020.   

According to the government’s communication and protocol department, among the subjects on the agenda of discussions between the sides, there were: actions undertaken by Moldova’s authorities to ensure a fair and transparent electoral process, in accordance with the democratic norms and standards, aspects of the impact of the epidemiological situation dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic on the holding of the ballot, organization of the voting process in the Transnistrian region and outside Moldova, aspects regarding the inclusive electoral process, as well as subjects on ensuring the pluralism and the objective coverage of candidates at the presidential polls  in mass media, etc.  

The PM noted that Moldova had to take an important exam and the government was involved in the process of ensuring all necessary measures, so that the elections are carried out democratically.

„We have already experience in the organization of ballots during pandemic; we will ensure the observance of all protection norms. The financial means for the purchasing of the necessary medical and protection equipment, meant for holding the elections, have been allocated. The Foreign Affairs and European Integration Ministry is busy with the subject of identifying the locations which would meet the requirements and norms for the polling stations from abroad, taking into account that we want all Moldova’s citizens, including those living abroad, to be able to exercise their right to vote,’’ the prime minister said.  

In the context, Ion Chicu also said that the Central Electoral Commission had ruled to set up 139 polling stations abroad and 42 polling stations in the Transnistrian region. The government will ensure the ballot’s transparency and in this respect, the observers will ensure a wide monitoring of the electoral process.
