Disabled people, empoloyees of residential institutions receive equipment of protection against COVID-19 in Moldova

Chisinau, 22 October /MOLDPRES/ - As many as 1,700 people with disabilities and employees of residential institutions from Balti, Cocieri, Orhei, Hancesti, Branzeni and Badiceni are supplied with protection masks, gloves, spectacles, visors, disinfectant and protection footwear. The equipment was purchased with EU’s support.
The equipment’s distribution took place today, at an event on the launch of the project, The safety and intellectual and psychosocial rights of persons with disabilities on the period of the COVID-19 pandemic. The project is financed by the European Union and implemented by Keystone Moldova. The overall cost of the project is 60,000 euros.
Besides the equipment in those six residential-type institutions, competent people are to carry out activities of informing about preventive measures and individual protection measures; on this purpose, video monitors will be set and information will be spread out in easily understandable language for disabled people.
„On this crisis period, EU and its member states – Europe Team – act together, in order to provide support to citizens of Moldova, mobilizing resources, ensuring the supply of protection equipment, stimulating the research and backing the partner countries. The attention paid to the social inclusion and safety of persons with disabilities is priority. The assistance provided through this project on behalf of the European Union is for the people who need this support most of all, especially in the conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic,’’ Ambassador of the European Union to Moldova Peter Michalko said.
The project will also enhance the access of disabled people to the free of charge phone assistance service for persons with disabilities, in order to benefit from information and psychological support and to prevent cases of abuse, negligence or infringement of rights. Thus, 30 mobile phones will be donated to people with disabilities from institutions, being trained in the field of self-presentation as to the rights and support as one’s equal.
