World Health Organization donates Moldova one consignment of insulin

Chisinau, 23 October /MOLDPRES/ - About 5,000 ampullas of Actrapid and 2,000 ampullas of Protafan, received for free from on behalf of the World Health Organization (WHO), have been distributed to all primary and hospital medical assistance institutions of Moldova.
According to data by the Health, Labour and Social Protection Ministry (MSMPS), WHO received the donation from the Novo Nordisk Company (Denmark), which consists of insulin and the preparation Glucagon, worth 1.3 million dollars, meant for 50 countries, including four countries of the WHO’s European region. The assistance is meant to ensure enhanced access to essential health services, with emphasis put on the primary medical assistance in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.
„The insulin offered free of charge by WHO, 5,000 ampullas of Actrapid and 2,000 ampullas of Protafan, was distributed to all primary and hospital medical assistance institutions from Moldova. The quantity of insulin received as donation covers the needs of these institutions for one year, which contributes to ensuring the free of charge access of hospitalized patients and outpatients to insulin,’’ Health, Labour and Social Protection Minister Viorica Dumbraveanu said.
The preparation Glucagon, provided by WHO, is an essential medicine used for the treatment of hypoglycemia, available in Moldova for the first time ever. According to MSMPS, 90 per cent of the overall quantity will be distributed to the Mother and Child Institute, 3 per cent – to the Holy Trinity Municipal Clinical Hospital and 7 per cent – to the Republican Clinical Hospital.
Presently, 120,493 people sick with diabetes are recorded in Moldova, of whom 17,835 - with diabetes of the types 1 and 2, who need therapy with insulin.
