Chisinau-based Nicolae Testemitanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy marks 75th anniversary of foundation

Chisinau, 23 October /MOLDPRES/ - Prime Minister Ion Chicu today participated in a festive meeting of the Senate of the Nicolae Testemitanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy (USMF), on the occasion of the University’s 75th anniversary of foundation. The event was chaired by USMF Rector Emil Ceban and continued with the Gala of Laureates, the government’s communication and protocol department has reported.   

Ion Chicu congratulated the Senate members and the teaching staff for the professional work during years and strengthening the prestige of the University. The PM expressed confidence that USMF was a true scientific heritage – one of the pillars around which Moldova will revive and flourish.  

„A few countries of the world have capacity to teach and educate highly qualified physicians, providing such services even to foreigners. Your capacity, honoured USMF professors, to bring the fame of the institution even abroad is an extremely valuable achievement and heritage. It is our everybody’s duty to preserve and consolidate this potential and the authority in the world which you have created for us, with which we are proud and which you have acquired with so much work and dedication,’’ Ion Chicu said.    

The prime minister said that 2020 was the year bringing on the forefront the importance of the proper and continuous development of the health systems. In the context, Chicu addressed a touching message to the professors, physicians, residents and students who, besides the academic activity, work assiduously in the country’s hospitals to save human lives.   

„I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart. The job description does not stipulate this, but you are people with generous hearts, with a high spirit of responsibility, with love for the people and country. I thank you and I bow down before you for this. You give us everybody an example of what means to be a HUMAN. The people of USMF and you institution is among the few redoubts of the defence of our national conscience, of the material and spiritual heritage, edified by our people during hundreds of years,’’ the PM said.     

Ion Chicu noted that, in all times, the physician had been and deserved to be respected and presently it was necessary to wake up the community’s conscience about the status and honour of the physicians in the society. ‘’There is no way of flourishing and development of the country, if the physician and teacher did not enjoy that very authority and respect, which we still recall and around which we hope to revive,’’ Ion Chicu stressed.  

The government today awarded 11 Honorary Diplomas to employees of the University, as a token of appreciating the contribution to the development of the higher medical and pharmaceutical education, medical science and practice, for substantial contribution to the process of physicians’ professional education.  

During 75 years of work, the University has educated more than 42,000 physicians and pharmacists, of whom over 7,000 work in medical institutions from abroad. At present, more than 7,300 young people from Moldova and another 33 countries study at the university departments, including at the clinical ones, placed in 88 modern clinics and polyclinics.     

The intellectual and spiritual heritage of the University is represented by those 1,200 specialists, including 8 academicians and 5 corresponding members of Moldova’s Academy of Sciences, titular and honorary members of the academies of other states, 172 PhDs and 528 doctors, 15 Laureates of State Prize in the sector of science and technology.
