Council of Europe donates consignment of medical equipment to Moldova's penitentiary system

Chisinau, 29 October /MOLDPRES/ - The Council of Europe today donated a consignment of medical equipment worth 148,888 euros to the penitentiary system of Moldova.

Attending the event of receiving the devices were Justice Minister Fadei Nagacevschi, Head of the Council of Europe’s Office in Chisinau William Massolin and the acting director of the National Administration of Penitentiaries, Vladimir Cojocaru.

“The assistance provided by the Council of Europe’s Office in Chisinau to the Justice Ministry, especially the National Administration of Penitentiaries, will certainly ensure the improvement and adjusting of the national standards to the European ones as to the improvement of the detention conditions. Also, the providing of advanced medical services to people deprived of freedom through the use of modern medical technology will enhance the quality of life of the imprisoned people,’’ Nagacevschi said.

The head of the Council of Europe’s Office in Moldova noted that the medical equipment and devices donated fully met the requirements for providing the healthcare services in penitentiaries and were meticulously selected to serve the goal of continuously adjusting the organization of medical assistance services in penitentiaries to the international standards in this sector.

The medical equipment was supplied and set at all 16 sections of primary penitentiary medical assistance and at the Penitentiary Hospital. The donation consisted of 18 types of medical equipment and devices, such as portable pulse oximeters, glucometers, autoclaves for sterilizing, defibrillators, portable tonometers for eyes, dental complexes with sets of instruments, etc.

The donation was made within the programme, Promotion of a criminal justice system based on the observance of human rights in Moldova, financed by the government of Norway and implemented by the Council of Europe.
