Moldovan electoral body unveils preliminary results of presidential election

Chisinau, 2 November /MOLDPRES/- The Central Electoral Commission presented this morning the official preliminary results of the presidential election. Thus, after processing 2141 (99.91%) reports from the 2143 open sections, PAS candidate Maia Sandu has got 36.12% and another 32.64% opted for independent candidate Igor Dodon. The two will fight for the presidency in the runoff, which will be organized in two weeks.

CEC head Dorin Cimil said that today, at 07.00, the last polling stations in the USA were closed, and the results are to be processed. He added that 1,214,757 (42.76%) citizens participated in Sunday's election. The most active voters were in Ocnita, where 47 percent of voters went to the polls and the most passive were the inhabitants of Basarabeasca, who went out to vote - 35 percent.

148,230 citizens of the Republic of Moldova voted at the polling stations set up outside the country. The highest turnout was at the polling stations in Italy, Britain and France.

Preliminary data from the CEC show that in the capital, in the 1 November election, 289,789 citizens voted, of whom 130,991 (45.20%) voted for PAS candidate Maia Sandu, another 99,007 (34.17%) for independent candidate Igor Dodon. 

For candidate of Our Party Renato Usatii voted 27,664 (9.55%) from Chisinau, another 9385 (3.24%) voted for candidate of Shor Party Violeta Ivanov. Candidate of DA Party Andrei Năstase was voted by 8420 (2.91%) Chisinau residents and for candidate of the National Unity Party Octavian Ţîcu - 6871 (2.37%). The other two candidates on the lists, Tudor Deliu and Dorin Chirtoaca, gained one percent of the votes.

Under the legislation, the runoff will be held in two weeks. This is after no electoral contestant managed to get 51% of the votes.
