UN campaign 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence launched in Moldova

Chisinau, 25 November /MOLDPRES/ - The UN campaign, 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence, was launched in Moldova today, on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, annually marked on 25 November.
According to the government’s communication and protocol department, PM Ion Chicu, along with Parliament Speaker Zinaida Greceanii, participated in the event on the launch of the campaign, held outside the parliament building.
„The violence against women and girls is a shame for all societies of the world and a major obstacle to the inclusive, fair and sustainable development. The prevention and combating of this phenomenon is a major concern of Moldova’s government. The country is firmly committed to develop the national mechanisms for the prevention and combating of the gender-based discrimination and ensuring the security of women and girls,’’ the prime minister said. He stressed the importance of the campaign, dedicating to mobilization for fighting the violence against women and girls.
The PM also highlighted the importance of the sustainable cooperation partnerships, in order to cope with this global phenomenon. ‘’Only through joint efforts, multi-sectoral approach and through joint actions between the central, local authorities, civil society, mass media, private sector, as well as with the support of the international community, we can enhance the awareness about this infringement of the dignity and human rights. The vaccine against the gender-based violence is found in the attitude and behavior of each of us,’’ Ion Chicu said.
The prime minister thanked the development partners of Moldova, including UN Moldova, UN Women and United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Embassy of Sweden in Moldova, national coalition, Life without domestic violence, which support the government’s efforts to combat the gender-based violence.
The event culminated with the symbolic action of illuminating the parliament building in the orange colour – the colour of the global, as well as national campaign. The buildings of the Interior Ministry and the Chisinau Water Tower will be similarly illuminated.
The campaign, 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence, will end on 10 December, on the International Human Rights Day, with the symbolic connection between the violence against women and human rights established.
