Chernobyl accident's victims commemorated in Moldovan capital

Chisinau, 14 December /MOLDPRES/ - A ceremony of commemorating the victims of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power station took place at the Memorial Complex on the Trandafirilor Street from Chisinau. Prime Minister Ion Chicu made up with a message in the memory of the participants in the Chernobyl accident relief works.   

Attending the event were more officials, among whom Defence Minister Victor Gaiciuc, representatives of central and local public authorities, Public Association, Chernobyl Union of Moldova, and Chernobyl Association from Chisinau.   

„Those tragic events, which took place 34 years ago, changed the mankind and left a serious imprint on the life of the residents from the region and not only. Today, I want to bow before the courage and devotion of the Moldovans who participated in the operation of liquidation of the consequences of the Chernobyl accident, meant to reduce the radioactive contamination,’’ Gaiciuc said.   

In the message published on the government’s webpage, the PM specified that ‘’although the pandemic this year created obstacles to the country’s economic development, limiting the budget’s financial possibilities, nevertheless, the government managed to carry out a string of actions to enhance the veterans’ social protection.’’

„Starting from 2021, the monthly allocation for the spouses survivors of the participants in the Chernobyl accident relief works will increase and will amount to 500 lei. Decision-makers plan to increase the monthly state allocations for veterans up to 500 lei. Also, the monthly allocation for the people with disabilities caused by the Chernobyl accident will increase by 100 lei and the veterans who participated in the relief works, who are not employed, will benefit from free of charge health insurances. At the same time, the problem of legislation and distribution of those 80 flats built for the participants in the Chernobyl accident relief works is under settlement,’’ the message also reads.    

According to the official data, more than 3,500 Moldovan citizens participated in the Chernobyl accident relief works, of whom 3,000 reservists, including 231 officers mobilized by military commissariats, 400 seasoned military, 70 Interior Ministry Employees and 500 civilians.
