Moldovan president has meeting with European Commission president in Brussels

Chisinau, 18 January /MOLDPRES/ - President Maia Sandu today started her official visit to Brussels, the presidential press service has reported.  

The head of state met President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen. Maia Sandu thanked the EU official for the support provided during years in various sectors, - a backing which got Moldova closer to the European family and from which the Moldovan citizens benefited.  

„I emphasized that the European integration is not an abstract notion – it a working plan for edifying a state with functional, strong institutions, and in order to improve the situation in the country through concrete projects,’’ Maia Sandu said. ‘’I discussed the importance of the quick access to the anti-Covid-19 vaccine for Moldova’s citizens and the need to provide the health system with protection equipment, the importance of the financial assistance for the country in the next years, as well as the role of the Eastern Partnership for our rapprochement with the European values and standards. Ursula von der Leyen assured us that we can further rely on the every support on behalf of EU both as to the Moldovan citizens’ vaccination and in terms of the continuous financial assistance to implement the reforms scheduled,’’ President Maia Sandu said after the meeting.     

Among other subjects tackled at the discussion, there is the serious situation of the farmers and small- end medium-sized enterprises from Moldova as a result of the last year drought and pandemic, as well as the way they can be helped to overcome the crisis. Also, Maia Sandu stressed that Moldova’s citizens had given her a strong anti-corruption mandate, which is the first step to strengthening a really European democracy in Moldova. She said that, after the snap parliamentary elections and setting up of a functional government, the implementation of the reforms planned would be possible.

„Moldova’s citizens during more years have made sure that the European Union was always by our side – both in good times and in more difficult moments. The cooperation with EU has brought concrete benefits to our citizens. The Free Trade Area with EU allowed increasing the commercial exchanges, creating jobs at home and enhanced Moldova’s resistance to the domestic and external economic shocks. The cooperation with EU is essential for our country, both on the dimension of strengthening the institutions and to attenuate the effects of the economic crisis,’’ President Maia Sandu said following the meeting with Ursula von der Leyen.
