Well-know Moldovan poet commemorated at 12 years after deparure

Chisinau, 18 January /MOLDPRES/ - Moldova today marks the 12th anniversary of the death of poet Grigore Vieru.
On this occasion, lovers of Vieru’s works laid flowers at the bust to the poet on the Alley of Classics of the Romanian Literature from the Stefan cel Mare public garden and the public libraries from Moldova organized diverse events in the virtual space: exhibitions, literary and musical recitals, etc.
Contacted by MOLDPRES, Raisa Vieru, the wife of the departed poet, said that she was happy that the writer had not been forgotten. ‘’After his passing away, busts were unveiled in Moldova and Romania, books were edited andinstitutions and streets from the two countries bear the name of the poet,’’ Raisa Vieru noted.
For his part, the head of the Moldovan Writers’ Union (USM), Arcadie Suceveanu, said that Grigore Vieru had deeply entered the national conscience and was a true national poet. ‘’He is the first contemporary classic with home I had opportunity to shake hands. His poetry is a Sunday, a holiday of the Romanian language,’’ the USM head stressed.
Grigore Vieru was born in the Pererita village, Hotin county, presently Briceni district, north Moldova, on 14 February 1935. He was author of more volumes of poems. Vieru was also author of the ABC-book. His works were translated in English, Russian, German, Italian, Bulgarian and other languages. In 1988, he was awarded the most prestigious distinction in the field of literature for children – the Hans Christian Andersen Honorary Diploma. In 1966, Grigore Vieru was awarded the Order of the Republic. In 1990, Vieru became Honorary Member of the Romanian Academy. Grigore Vieru died in the wake of a traffic accident on 18 January 2009. Vieru was posthumously awarded the Star of Romania National Order in rank of Grand Cross. Presently, more schools from Moldova, a boulevard from Chisinau and a street from Iasi, Romania, bear his name.
