Moldovan president sums up results of visit to Brussels

Chisinau, 20 January /MOLDPRES/ - President Maia Sandu today held a news briefing, during which she summed up the results of her visit to Brussels. Sandu noted that ‘’Moldova has a huge openness in EU.’’

Maia Sandu also said that she had had over ten meetings with high-ranking EU officials on 18-19 January. ‘’I discussed with high officials of the European Commission, European Parliament and European Council. I had a meeting with the prosecutor of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office, Laura Codruta Kovesi. In EU, there is a huge potential for us to be helped – a potential missed by the former leadership of Moldova in the last years. EU wants to help us, to back Moldova’s development; yet, it needs reliable partners here. A stable governance is needed. When this happens, all funds will be de-blocked,’’ Sandu said.      

The Moldovan president also said that the current crisis can be overcome only through the organization of snap parliamentary elections. ‘’The snap polls must take place as soon as possible,’’ Sandu stressed.

The head of state said that, in the months to come, EU might decide on the framework of bilateral support for the next seven years, as well as on the assistance which the country might get within the Eastern Partnership. ‘’ Even in the lack of a government with full powers, I started the discussions on the medium-term assistance. I said that we want assistance especially for supporting small- and medium-sized enterprises, for infrastructure projects and for the country’s energy provision. I asked for support for the agricultural sector as well,’’ Sandu specified.   

The Moldovan president also informed that she had got a promise of the European partners to find quick solutions for the anti-Covid-19 vaccine to reach Moldova and got confirmation that 21.4 million euros of the police reform support programme would be allocated soon.
