Number of women involved in electoral process increases in Moldova

Chisinau, 10 February /MOLDPRES/ - A gender balancing is noticed in the electoral process from Moldova and the number of women involved has increased by 47 per cent.
The Central Electoral Commission (CEC) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Moldova today launched an analysis of the prospect for gender equality of the 2020 presidential elections. CEC head Dorin Cimil said that the number of women involved in the electoral process had grown against 2016.
„Two women and six men participated in the present ballot as electoral contenders. As a result of the voting, Moldova has a president woman for the first time in its history. The number of women heads of district electoral commissions stood at 47 per cent against 2016. The number of women deputy heads of these commissions increased too. More than 20,000 of those who exercised their right to vote did it for the first time ever and over a half of them were girls,’’ Cimil said.
According to an analysis unveiled by representatives of the Centre for Continuous Electoral Training, more than 5,500 people were trained for the presidential elections from 2020, of whom 23 per cent were men. The ratio between men and women among the collectors of signatures for the contenders’ registration was of 70 to 30 per cent. A higher level of voters’ participation in the polls was recorded in the runoff, with a higher presence of women - 53 per cent. The number of young voters with the age of 18 years increased by ten per cent against 2016 and accounted for 62.5 per cent. The men aged 18 years were more active than women. In the rural settlements, the number of women who took part in the elections accounted for 43.8 per cent and the urban environment – 55.4 per cent.
