Moldovan poet would have turned 86 years old

Chisinau, 14 February /MOLDPRES/- Departed poet Grigore Vieru would have turned 86 today.
Academician Mihai Cimpoi stated that Grigore Vieru has a special merit, even of a historical nature, that he returned us to the sources, to the roots of our being, to the holy ones, to the sacred.
According to the president of the Writers' Union of Moldova, Arcadie Suceveanu, Grigore Vieru has entered deeply into our national consciousness and is a true national poet.
Grigore Vieru was born on February 14, 1935 in Pererata village, Hotin County, now Briceni District.
In 1988 he was awarded the most prestigious international distinction in children's literature - the Honorary Diploma H. Ch. Andersen. In 1996 he was awarded the Order of the Republic. In 1990 he was elected Honorary Member of the Romanian Academy, and in 1993 - corresponding member. He passed away on January 18, 2009 following a car accident.
Grigore Vieru was awarded post-mortem the National Order Star of Romania in the rank of Grand Cross. Currently, several schools in the Republic of Moldova, a boulevard in the capital and a street in Iasi, Romania, bear his name.
