Moldovan acting PM participates in event on commemorating Afghanistan war victims

Chisinau, 15 February /MOLDPRES/ - Acting Prime Minister Aureliu Ciocoi, along with President Maia Sandu and Parliament Speaker Zinaida Greceanii, today laid flowers at the Memorial Complex, Holy Memory – to Motherland’s Sons, in the memory of the people who died in the Afghanistan war. Attending the event were ministers, diplomats, servicemen, former fighters and their relatives, the government’s communication and protocol department has reported.
The participants in the event stood silent for one minute in the memory of those who died in the Afghanistan war. The acting PM said that this war was a tragic event in Moldova’s history. He expressed gratitude for the sacrifice and devotion of those who participated in the combat actions.
Aureliu Ciocoi reconfirmed the cabinet’s commitment to further promote the measures of backing the war veterans, invalids in the social assistance and law sectors. Also, the acting prime minister demanded undertaking needed measures, in order to identify the fate of those four young people reported missed following their participation in combat actions. ‘’I think that each state’s duty is to know exactly what happened with each of its sons,’’ Ciocoi noted.
The Day of Commemoration of those who died in the Afghanistan war was established on 15 February under the Parliament Decision No 16 from 11 February 2011. The government on 19 April 2016 approved also an action plan, Memory! Honour! Respect!, which sees the holding of a string of activities for eternalizing the memory of those who died in the fights and gratitude for the sacrifice of the Afghanistan war.
The 32nd anniversary of the end of the Afghanistan war, which lasted nine years, as of 1979 till 1989, is marked this year. More than 12,000 Moldova’s citizens participated in combat actions, of whom over 300 ones died.
