Chisinau, 15 February /MOLDPRES/ - President Maia Sandu today laid flowers at the Monument, Holy Memory – to the Motherland’s Sons, on the Day of Commemoration of the people who died in the Afghanistan war, the presidential press service has reported.
„Today, we commemorate the people who did not return from that war. The people whose lives were interrupted sharply, unjustly and tragically thousands of kilometers far from their homes. Thousands of kilometers far from their parents. Thousands of kilometers far from the nut-tree nearby their gate. Thousands of kilometers from the beloved soul. I am sure that their last though was about Moldova. And our duty is to send our thoughts and prayers to them even one day per year. As an answer to their prayers, as an eternal relation between them and this land,’’ Maia Sandu said at a solemn meeting.
The head of state said that the Afghanistan war veterans were of great value for Moldova. ‘’We bow before them for the courage they proved and we thank them for what they do now and for the support they provide to the society every day. The lesson of any war is that we should value the peace, understanding and possibility to work freely, to educate the new generation in harmony,’’ Maia Sandu noted.
In her speech, the Moldovan president also referred to Ion Ambrosi from the Tantareni village, central Telenesti district, one of the thousands of Moldovans who went through the tragedy of that war, but who had chance to return home and re-build his life and develop a prosperous business in agriculture. ‘’Now he is a successful farmer, he educated two children. Just as a many of those who returned from Afghanistan, he succeeded in his life and is an example for the entire country. His farm is often visited – beginning with future farmers, to European commissioners, ambassadors and ministers,’’ Maia Sandu said.
The Afghanistan war lasted nine years and ended with the withdrawal of the Soviet troops on 15 February 1989. As many as 301 Moldovans died in that war.
