Chisinau, 15 February /MOLDPRES/ - Parliament Speaker Zinaida Greceanii, other lawmakers today participated in solemn actions dedicated to the Day of Commemoration of those who died in the Afghanistan war, the parliament’s communication and public relations general department has reported.

Attending the event were former and current high-ranking officials, members of veterans’ associations, pupils, etc.

In a speech given at the solemn meeting, the parliament speaker said that, although 32 years had passed since the full withdrawal of the troops from Afghanistan, the echo of those events remained alive.

According to the speaker, the keeping of the memory of those events was due, first of all, namely to the participants in the Afghanistan fights, who represent an example of dignity and patriotism.

The parliament speaker pointed out that, although the role of the Soviet troops in Afghanistan was tried to be doubted, the young people sent there had no guilt; they just fulfilled their duty and did this with honour.

”They proved absolute devotion to the Motherland. Respect and bows to them!’’ the speaker said.

Zinaida Greceanii said that those who had not known the horrors of war must understand the grief in the souls of veterans.

”The sympathy and love for each other are the feelings on which the society should be edified and developed,’’ Grecianii stressed.

The speaker highly appreciated the activity of the Union of Afghanistan War Veterans from Moldova and its leadership. ‘’You are united by brotherhood in arms, which has no borders and which becomes stronger and stronger each year. I wish you to preserve this spirit of fellow servicemen and I wish health to you and your families,’’ Zinaida Greceanii also said.

The parliament speaker laid flowers at the memorial complex, Holy Memory - to the Motherland’s Sons, from the Rascani district of Chisinau, as well as at each granite plaque set there in the memory of the Moldovan soldiers who died on battlefields.

As many as 12,500 Moldovan soldiers and officers participated in the military operations in Afghanistan, including one MP in the current parliament – Oleg Savva.

The Soviet troops were withdrawn from Afghanistan after a war of almost ten years, on 15 February 1989.

The Day of Commemoration of the Moldovans who died in the Afghanistan war was established under parliament decision in 2011.
