Chisinau, 16 June /MOLDPRES/ - President Maia Sandu today came up with a message of support for the local public authorities and, at the same time, she called on the representatives of the political parties and the control bodies’ ones not to exert pressures on mayors from settlements, the presidential press service has reported.
„The intimidation of mayors must stop. With the nearing of the elections, I receive ever more signals about the boosting of pressures on mayors and local leaders on behalf of representatives of political parties and control bodies. This information comes from regions; the mayors with whom I discuss when to I go to the territory inform me about it. Also, it was signaled to us by members of the Congress of Local Public Authorities of Moldova (CALM),’’ reads the message by President Maia Sandu.
The head of state noted that the pressures were made in various forms: groundless controls and verifications; unforeseen visits; taking over of accounting documents, blocking of accounts, without grounded reason. Their goal is ‘’persuading’’ the troublesome mayors to allow the use of community’s administrative resources in favour of one or another party.
„The political struggle must be made through other means! The parliamentary electoral campaign cannot hit the work of the local authorities and the citizens should elect freely, without administrative interferences. The local autonomy is essential for the development of Moldova and it must be observed,’’ Maia Sandu stressed.
The Moldovan president also conveyed to the local authorities that she would continue backing them. ‘’Dear mayors, you have an ally and a support in my person. Inform the Presidency about the abuses you are subjected to. We will take care to make them public and those who commit them be documented accordingly, in order to be called to account under the law,’’ Maia Sandu added.
