Mihai Eminescu National Theatre of Moldova: 100th anniversary of foundation

Chisinau, 23 August /MOLDPRES/ -The 100th anniversary of the foundation of the Mihai Eminescu National Theatre (TNME) with status of national theatre will be marked on 6 October. The institution’s foundation was influenced by more initiatives coming from personalities of the Romanian culture and culture institutions. The today’s subject is titled, 1958 – Obvidiu play by Vasile Alecsandri - a new step towards the self-assertion of the Romanian culture.
Contacted by MOLDPRES, TNME director Petru Hadarca said that, after March 1957, Andrei Lupan, who held high-ranking offices in the Soviet Union in the party’s hierarchy, demanded that the leadership of the musical and dramatic Moldovan Theatre stages Romanian classical dramaturgy, officially called Moldovan one. Thus, stage manager Victor Gherlac staged the drama Ovidiu by Vasile Alecsandri. This play was a new step towards the self-assertion of the Romanian culture and especially of the Romanian language in its cult, literary variant.
The premiere took place in November 1958, with Petru Baracci in the leading part. In 1959, a great actor of Moldova, Eugeniu Ureche, took over this this leading part. This was a part he wanted very much. The audience from Chisinau received the two actors with equal enthusiasm.
