Chisinau, 11 January /MOLDPRES/ - Moldova’s Academy of Sciences (ASM) and the Nicolae Testemitanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy (USMF) today organized a roundtable titled, The Respiratory Infections: epidemiological situation in Moldova and the world.
Attending the event were ASM president Ion Tighineanu, USMF Rector Emil Ceban, well-known specialists in the medicine sector, ASM corresponding members.
In his greeting speech, ASM president Ion Tighineanu said that Moldova’s Academy of Sciences kept an eye on the dynamic of the epidemiological situation. ‘’In 2020, when the first feature reports on the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus appeared in the world, we organized a roundtable on 6 February, to which we invited the best experts we had and we rang the belles in our society that a quite aggressive virus, SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, was nearing our borders. Really, in early March, the coronavirus crossed the border of Moldova. In the spring of the 2020 year, we organized two international conferences with the involvement of experts from Western countries. In May 2020, a conference with experts from China was held and certainly, at that time, we created an academic platform of communication, led by academician Eva Gudumac, the deputy leader of the ASM Life Sciences Section. I want to thank everybody for the contribution brought to the discussions which took place at ASM on the peculiarities of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, its interference with other diseases,’’ the ASM president said.
Contacted by MOLDPRES, an ASM corresponding member, Viorel Prisacari, said that the situation in the field of acute respiratory infections was quite delicate. The pandemics are the worst disasters which hit the mankind and, whether we want or not, the situation forced us to fight against these infections. First of all, we had means, we knew the causal agent, its peculiarities. Scientists quite quickly got specific ways of testing, ways of prevention, such as the vaccine, treatment, how the disease is transmitted. We saved the situation due to science people. We got used to implement these measures with difficulty: wearing masks, observing the social distance, hygiene, self-isolation measures, going to doctor, etc. This led to the diminution of the morbidity. Now, these measures are both efficient for influenza and for the acute respiratory infections. Meanwhile, the residents’ receptivity was enhanced: children were born with no immunity to these diseases. Another factor of infections’ spread is the migration. That is why the situation is delicate – because especially children do not have immunity. Hospitals are full of sick people, as we do not observe the measures of infections’ prevention. The society must be aware of the danger of any infection,’’ Viorel Prisacari said.
For his part, university professor Gheorghe Placinta said that, among the measures of preventing the respiratory infections, there were vaccination, early appealing to physician, who sets the diagnose, the plan of investigations and treatment.
The works of the roundtable were broadcast online.
