Chisinau, April 20 /MOLDPRES/- Over 200 specialists in various medical fields - epidemiologists, family doctors, public health specialists, students and resident doctors participated in a national scientific conference "Management of waste resulting from medical activities". Final results of the research project "Study on the management process of waste resulting from medical activities in the Republic of Moldova" have been unveiled there.

The conference focused on issues related to the normative regulatory framework regarding the management of medical waste in the Republic of Moldova; recycling methods, current practices for managing medical waste in public and private institutions, conditions for collecting, storing, transporting and treating medical waste.

The specialists stressed that the waste generated during diagnostic, surveillance, treatment and medical recovery activities, including from medical research and production, testing, storage and distribution of medicines, as well as biological products represents an imminent risk to human health and environment. When they are not managed in a community spirit and are disposed of together with household waste, they greatly increase the risk of transmitting contagious diseases.

At the same time, several specialists shared their own experience and practices in managing medical waste.

The event was organized by the Epidemiology Discipline and Hygiene Discipline within the Department of Preventive Medicine of USMF "Nicolae Testemițanu", in partnership with the National Public Health Agency, the Moldovan Association of Biosafety and Biosecurity and the Society of Hygienists from the Republic of Moldova, under the auspices of the Ministry of Health and with the financial support of Soros Foundation Moldova.
