Chinese Language Day marked today

Chisinau, 20 April /MOLDPRES/ - The Chinese Language Day is marked in the world on 20 April. The goal of the event is to emphasize the contribution of the Chinese language, literature and poetry in the world’s culture. The marking of this day regards the promotion of the multilingualism, cultural diversity and the equal use of those six official languages of the United Nations, among which the Chinese one as well.
The Chinese Language Day is annually marked on the Guyu period (Cereals’ rains), the sixth out of those 24 solar periods created from times immemorial for the guidance of the agricultural activities, which fit the date of 20 April in the Gregorian calendar. This day also brings homage to the Chinese mythological personage Cangjie, who invented the Chinese characters. It is said that he was the official historian of the Yellow Emperor, according to the website www.un.org.
The Chinese Language Day of this year will be organized with the subject, Chinese Wisdom for a Green World, in order to provide wisdom and solutions for an ecological and sustainable development.
The Chinese language was recognized as official language of the United Nations in 1946. Nevertheless, in the first years, the Chinese language did not witness an enhanced frequency in UN’s work. The situation was improved following the reestablishment of the legal rights of the People’s Republic of China within the United Nations in 1971. In 1973, The UN General Assembly included the Chinese language as working language, with the measure adopted also by the Security Council in 1974.
