Chisinau, 23 June /MOLDPRES/ - Moldova today marks the 25th anniversary of the Declaration of Sovereignty adopted by the MPs of the first parliament (1990-1994). The Parlamentul-90 association organised a ceremony on this occasion. Attending the event were high-ranking officials.

The head of the mentioned association, Mihai Cotorobai, said that „ the Declaration of Sovereignty represented the break up from the Soviet regime and supremacy of the Constitution and laws of the Moldovan Soviet Socialist Republic (RSSM) on its entire territory”.

President Nicolae Timofti said that the provisions of the Declaration of Sovereignty are modern at present too. Timofti referred to the principle no. 2 of the document, which reads that „no part of the nation, no group of citizens, no political party or public organisation, no other form of organisation, no private person has the right to assign him the right to exercise sovereignty”.

„The nation and state of Moldova finds in a situation when they have to claim the right to exercise its sovereignty. We will get closer to this desideratum if we anchor into the European space as much as possible,” Timofti said.

Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu said that the Declaration of Sovereignty represents „the first step taken on the path got over by Moldova towards independence and affirmation at international level”.

The first president of Moldova, Mircea Snegur, highlighted that „successes of Moldova on the European integration line are due namely to the foundation laid in the `90's”.

The Declaration of Sovereignty of Moldova was adopted on 23 June 1990 by the lawmakers of the Supreme Soviet of the Moldovan Soviet Socialist Republic, which was member of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.

The declaration stipulates the supremacy of the laws of RSSM over the union’s one, establishes the republican citizenship and provides the right to set diplomatic ties with countries all over the world. The document highlights the unity and indivisible nature of the state, the fact that Moldova is demilitarised and the separation of powers into: legislative, executive and judicial.

The Declaration of Sovereignty served as model for working out the Declaration of Independence and Constitution of Moldova.
