"This is the first important step on the way covered by our country towards independence and self-assertion on the international stage. This is a merit of the then lawmakers, that must be recognized and appreciated at its true value, as the MPs were learning the law of democracy en route and had to take into account, in making decisions, all subtleties of processes occurring in the Moldovan society, in particular, and the union one, in general," the speaker said.

Candu thanked the MPs of the first parliament for efforts made in fight for freedom, independence and national revival. The speaker said that the 25 years of sovereignty had been a not at all easy period for Moldova, as edifying a country implies much effort.

"Our major goal is European integration, and for this, we have to carry out an intensive programme of political, economic, institutional and judicial reforms. Presently, being at a new stage, we have to take maximum effort in achieving the ideals of sovereignty and independence of Moldova and to do our best for the latter to find its place and assert itself in the family of civilized European nations," he also said.

Adrian Candu gave a special and exclusive issue of stamps to the MPs of the first parliament, published on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Declaration of Sovereignty.

The Declaration of Sovereignty was adopted by the first democratic parliament on 23 June 1990. The document was at the basis of elaboration of the Declaration of Independence and Constitution of Moldova. The Declaration of Sovereignty provides for the domestic law supremacy over the union ones, establishes the national citizenship and envisages the right to set diplomatic relations with all the countries of the world.
