Acting premier chairs meeting of Millennium Challenge Account Moldova Observers' Council

Chisinau, 3 July /MOLDPRES/ - Acting Prime Minister Natalia Gherman today chaired a meeting of the Observers’ Council (CO) of the Millennium Challenge Account Moldova. The participants assessed the results of the first stage of the Compact Programme Moldova, the government’s communication and media relations department has reported.
Natalia Gherman thanked the Millennium Challenge Corporation of the U.S. Government for excellent cooperation, openness and commitment as to achieving common goals. „The attitude and flexibility of partners within the Millennium Challenge Corporation are highly appreciated by the government, our partners and Moldovans,” Gherman said. The prime minister highlighted that the Moldovan authorities take efforts, so that Moldova benefits from a new Compact programme, which might be focused on modernising the energy sector.
For his part, the head of the Ecological Movement of Moldova, representative of the civil society in CO Alecu Renita said that the Compact programme, besides technical investment, also was an investment in changing mentality, which will yield results in the long run. „This programme showed that economic interest may be combined with the environmental protection,” Renita added.
At the same time, Millennium Challenge Corporation Country Director Leslie McCuaig stressed that the Compact programme’s results are appreciated in Washington and voiced hope that investments in modernising Moldova’s infrastructure would continue.
The Compact Programme is an assistance programme of the U.S. Government in amount of 262 million dollars, meant to contribute to Moldova's economic growth by restoring roads and supporting transition to a modern agriculture.
