Council of Europe launches criminal justice reform project in Moldova

Chisinau, 15 July /MOLDPRES/ - The Council of Europe launched a project titled "Support to Justice Sector Reform in Moldova" today.
The project aims to improve the capacities of law enforcement bodies and adjust criminal justice legislation to European standards, provide the necessary support for reforming the Prosecution and develop capacities that prevent and ensure remedial action in cases of abuse.
Attending the event, Justice Minister Vladimir Grosu mentioned the importance of implementing reforms in the field of criminal justice in Moldova, as well as the achievements that had been made so far with the support of the Council of Europe.
“In some areas, we advanced more, in others - less. A first step was voting on the law on Prosecution in the first reading. Another issue relates to the adoption of the law on mediation, which allows us to diversify the scope of legal institutions", said Grosu.
For his part, Head of the Council of Europe Office in Moldova Jose Luis Herrero said that Moldova had registered progress in the field of reforming law enforcement bodies".
"The law on Prosecution was adopted in the first reading, we are ready to support the Moldovan authorities to align national legislation to European standards," said Herrero.
The project is part of the Council of Europe’s Action Plan to support democratic reforms in Moldova in 2013-2016 and is funded by the government of Denmark.
