Romania to back adjustment of Moldovan defence sector to western standards

Chisinau, 21 July /MOLDPRES/ - Romania is willing to continue to implement joint projects and participate together with Moldovan servicemen in multinational and bilateral drills. The chief of the Romanian General Staff, General-Lieutenant Nicolae-Ionel Ciuca made statements to this effect at a meeting with Acting Defence Minister Viorel Cibotaru in Chisinau today.
The officials assessed the present stage of the Moldovan-Romanian ties in the military sector and tackled the reform of the National Army and Romania’s contribution to adjust the Moldovan defence system to the western standards.
Cibotaru referred to the approval of the defence capacity building package in Brussels in past June and thanked Romania for all support provided in this respect.
The sides also approached the initiative to create a mixed peacekeeping battalion, made up of Moldovan, Romanian servicemen and from other countries. The idea to create such a subunit was launched during Cibotaru’s visit to Bucharest in past May.
The Romanian delegation will visit the Stefan cel Mare motorised infantry brigade, the Military Training Centre of Moldova brigade, where trainings will be organised within the Efort comun 2015 drill, with participation of a group of servicemen of the 151 Battalion, Razboieni Infantry of the Romanian Army.
Nicolae-Ionel Ciuca pays an official visit to Moldova on 21–22 July.
