Moldovan Constitutional Court approves initiative on electing president

Chisinau, 24 July /MOLDPRES/ - The Constitutional Court (CC) today approved the initiative to revise article 78 of the Constitution, which stipulates the procedure for electing the president.
Thus, the CC magistrates acknowledged the notification lodged by a group of 46 MPs who requested changing the way of electing the president of Moldova in respect of the required number of votes.
According to the draft on the amendment of article 78, paragraph 3 of the Constitution, the Moldovan president will be elected by the majority vote of elected MPs and not a majority of three-fifths, as it was until now.
According to the CC, the draft on reviewing article 78, paragraph 3 of the Constitution can be adopted after at least six months from the date of presenting the initiative to amend the Constitution.
The Court's opinion is final, cannot be subject to any appeal and shall enter into force upon adoption.
