Moldovan law-enforcement bodies detain more persons for large-scale contraband

Chisinau, 13 August /MOLDPRES/ - The Prosecutor General's Office (PG) and Customs Service today informed that they had detained nine persons suspected of introducing, by contraband, sports goods and fitness equipment, in an especially large amount, in Moldova.
According to PG, among charged persons, there were the manager and founder of a company, three truck drivers,as well as four customs officers. They were charged with smuggling sports articles and fitness equipment estimated at over 62 million lei in 2008-2011.
The suspects worked out and implemented a scheme on initial import of goods into the free economic zone, with subsequently carrying out their fictitious re-export. Afterwards, they were removing the tracks of the illegal actions and distributed the gained incomes between them.
As a result of the culprits' illegal actions, goods worth 5.5 million dollars were introduced by contraband in Moldova, for which import rights amounting to 26 million lei were not paid.
On this case, policemen carried out 18 searches and found eights stamps of off-shore companies, as well as other objects and documents proving the involvement of these companies in fraudulent schemes.
For the committed offences, the accused persons run the risk of being sentenced to 3-10 years of imprisonment, with levying a distraint on personal property, in order to recover damages caused to the public budget.
