Ukraine marks Independence Day today

Chisinau, 24 August /MOLDPRES/- Ukraine, a state in Eastern Europe, situated between Russia, Moldova, Hungary, Slovakia, Poland and Belarus, today marks its Independence Day.
On the occasion of Ukraine's national holidays, Flag Day (23 August) and Independence Day (24 August), the Ukrainian Embassy in Chisinau today organised the official hoisting of the flag on the territory of the embassy, and flowers were laid at the monument to Taras Shevchenko, on the area of the Taras Shevchenko lyceum.
Ukraine has an area of 603,550 square km and a population of 44,429,471 residents.
On 16 July 1990, the new parliament adopted the Declaration of State Sovereignty of Ukraine. On 24 August 1991, the Ukrainian parliament adopted the Declaration of Independence, in which Ukraine is declared a democratic and independent state.
There are 300 museums and 7 national historical and cultural reservations in Ukraine.
Ukraine is a country with rich natural resources, advanced industry and agriculture. The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is made up of agriculture at a level of 15 per cent, industry - 46 per cent and services - 39 per cent.
Ukraine exports iron ore, oil, coal, gas, agricultural machinery, wheat and sugar. It imports crude oil, nonferrous metals, chemicals, industrial semi-finished goods, electronic gear and consumer goods.
The diplomatic relations between Moldova and Ukraine were established on 10 March 1992.
In January-April 2015, the Moldovan export to Ukraine decreased by 77.3 per cent against the same period last year. According to data by the National Statistics Bureau, the Ukrainian import in Moldova dropped by 31.7 per cent in the same period. The exchange of goods between Moldova and Ukraine was estimated at 119.6 million dollars in the first four months of 2015. At the same time, Moldova's negative balance in the trade with Ukraine amounted to 96.4 million dollars in the concerned period.
