Chisinau, 20 April /MOLDPRES/ - The import of fishing nets made of non-twisted polymer fibres will be banned till 31 December 2020, under a draft law approved by the cabinet today. The draft is to be considered by parliament.
The fishing nets made of polymer fibres are widely used in the illegal fishing by poachers, and according to the Environment Ministry, “cause a huge damage to the water biological resources.” Moldova is the only state of Europe which does not prohibit the import in these products, and their production is banned in most European countries, Environment Minister Valeriu Munteanu said.
Set in water, these nets become “true invisible traps.” Due to the low price of the nets, they are not only easily available for poachers, but are also easily abandoned in water when the environment inspector carries out controls, and pose a real danger because of a slow decomposition.
