GALEX national prizes awarded in Moldova

Chisinau, 21 April /MOLDPRES/ - The gala of the GALEX National Prizes laureates, the sixth issue, took place at the Chisinau-based National Library (BNRM) today.
In her speech, BNRM deputy director Aliona Tostogan has said the Alexe Rau Librarians’ League of Moldova organised traditionally, on the World Book and Copyright Day and the Librarian Day, the GALEX gala of National Prizes laureates. She said this was an important event in the librarians’ world nationwide, and was aimed at promoting and stimulating the work of librarians and persons having connection with the library, books and reading.
“Thus, the GALEX National Prizes Gala is meant to crown an activity in which we, year after year, invest talent, vocation, managing to produce services for the benefit of the community, with the main task to provide modern and professional services to users,” Tostogan noted.
Head of the Council of Europe’s Office in Moldova Jose Luis Herrero was awarded the prize “The best political supporter of libraries.” The distinction was offered for special contribution to the enrichment of the National Library’s collections with the most valuable publications of the Council of Europe in the fields of culture, education and youth.
The United States Agency for International Development – director Thomas Rhodes – received the prize for the most valuable patron of libraries, for the support provided to the National Library and libraries from Moldova, by filling the collections with publications which promote the adoption of new technologies and creation processes.
The prize for the best promoter and supporter of libraries, books and reading in mass media was awarded to Director General of the MOLDPRES State News Agency Vlad Darie. The distinction was provided for informational support of the Moldovan National Library’s activities, as well as for promotion, coverage of the image of book and reading in the society.
Twelve prizes have been awarded in all. A special prize, MAGISTER DIXIT, was awarded posthumously to the former director general of the National Library, Alexe Rau, for his excellent presence in the national culture.
The GALEX prize was set by the Moldovan Librarians’ League and National Library in 2010. The distinction represents a cube of luminescent crystal, symbolizing human perfection and perfection in the making, on a prop-pedestal.
