Moldova's foreign currency supply continues to grow amid slow increase in demand

Chisinau, 23 April /MOLDPRES/-Foreign currency supply from natural persons continues to grow amid a slow increase in the economic agents’ demand. The National Bank of Moldova (BNM) announces that the Foreign currency supply increased by 20.3 per cent in March against February, while the net currency demand was eight per cent higher than in February.
The coverage degree of the net currency demand coming from economic agents through the net currency supply offered by natural persons, reached 101.8 per cent in March against 91.4 per cent in February. The currency sold by the population accounts for 222 million dollars, three times more than what has been purchased. Euro currency sales have marked a significant increase of 61 per cent.
According to BNM, net currency supply from natural persons grew to 414.6 million dollars in the first quarter of 2016, twice more than the same period of time in 2015. On the other hand, the currency demand from economic agents decreased during this period by six per cent, reaching 410 million dollars.
Amid the currency excess in March 2016, the national currency appreciated against the US dollar by 1.4 per cent.
As for the currency structure of the net currency supply from natural persons, the single European currency still holds the biggest share of 63.8 per cent, followed by the US dollar with 21.9 per cent and the Russian ruble with 13.4 per cent.
