Chisinau, 26 April /MOLDPRES/- President Nicolae Timofti today conveyed a message on commemorating the Chernobyl Disaster Day, the presidential press service has reported.

The message reads:

“Dear fellow citizens,

Today, 26 April, we recall a difficult period that marked the mankind and commemorate the worthiest and bravest of us.

No doubt, the great tragedy, which was the cruelest and most ruthless atomic catastrophe of the history, by repercussions that are still being felt, remains in our memory and represents thereby an incontestable proof of the value of human life.

Thirty years have passed since the nuclear disaster, which took many lives and crippled destinies of those who gave continuity of the nation through courage and self-sacrifice. The shocking calamity destroyed the aspirations of nations thirsty for peace and quiet, took the livies of those who have misfortune to be close to the cursed place and did not spare even those who were to be born. The devastating effects were imprinted in the fate of more generations. Thus, when we say Chernobyl, we have in mind the perception of a unfinished disaster, which has become a cry of pain in the society.

On this sad day, I revere in front of those over 3,500 fellow citizens who participated in the Chernobyl nuclear accident relief works and I express them my deep gratitude for the fact that they sacrificed their lives, in order make us have a harmonious future.

We have built a world which condems the crimes against mankind and in which responsibility and solidarity are promoted by ancestors. At the same time, we are in the context in which the toughening of rules in terms of security and stability in the region can mean more attitudes and more concern to listen to the challenges of the time. Therefore, I am sure that the traditions of good neighbourliness and mutual respect will be a shield for  such events never happen again.

Dear fellow citizens,

We are obliged to preserve the memory of the victims and to honour veterans, in order to edify a prosperous society, especially in this difficult period of human history.

I offer sincere thanks to the Chernobyl Union of Moldova public association for the activity it carries out and daily support provided to veterans and mourning families”.

Also, the president signed a decree on giving state distinctions to a group of participants in the Chernobyl accident relief works “for contribution to the social protection of citizens hit by ionizing radiation, merits in ensuring ecological balance and intense organizational activity”.

The Order of Republic was offered to Chernobyl Union’s head Tudor Capatina.

Homeland Faith Order, 3rd degree, was offered to the head of the Chernobyl public association of the Riscani district of Chisinau, Mihail Condrea, and head of Chernobyl public association of Chisinau, Mihail Oncea.
