Chisinau hosts new meeting on implementing EU, CoE COMUS joint project, underway in Moldova

Chisinau, 11 May /MOLDPRES/ - Representatives of five countries – Armenia, Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine and Belarus – today brought together in Chisinau at the second workshop on training local actors involved in implementing the European Union’s and Council of Europe’s (CoE) joint project, Community-Led Urban Strategies in Historic Towns (COMUS). The event takes place on 11-12 May.
According to a press release by the Culture Ministry, attending the workshop on behalf of Moldova are representatives of the competent ministry and administration of the northern Soroca town – selected to serve as example for testing ways of innovating planning, based on conservation of the patrimony within the COMUS project.
In his speech, the state secretary at the Culture Ministry, Andrei Chistol, highlighted the role of the cultural heritage in the settlement’s economic development. He also stressed the importance of the COMUS project in providing new possibilities of developing the culture and creative sectors.
The participants in the meeting will assess and strengthen relevant plans of the towns involved in this project, which will confirm the role of cultural resources in enhancing the attractiveness, prosperity and living standards for the local community. On the second day of the meeting, the participants will go to Soroca to consider, on the spot, the actions scheduled within the project.
The COMUS project was launched in September 2015 at a regional seminar in Tbilisi, Georgia, and regards activities of cooperation with Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine and Belarus. The project is formulated based on the political priorities of CoE and EU, in the context of the Eastern Partnership Programme (2015-2020) and deals with the restoration of historical towns through conservation of the cultural heritage.
