Europe Day marked in Moldovan parliament

14:24 | 13.05.2016 Category: Official

Chisinau, 13 May /MOLDPRES/- The Europe Day was marked in parliament today, the parliament’s communication and public relations department has reported.

An exhibition, Europe through Children’s Eyes, opened the schedule of actions organized on Europe Day. Over 50 drawings made by children were staged in the parliament’s hall. The works’ authors are children aged between 6-16 years from community centres for children from Chisinau, as well as children from different districts of the country, who sent their drawings through the parliament's territorial information offices. The children, dressed in traditional costumes, talked to MPs and ambassadors about how they see Europe.

Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu announced that the best 12 drawings of children, selected by a jury, would be included in a calendar of parliament dedicated to the Europe Day.

“This purpose of the exhibition is to see what children think about Europe and especially Moldova’s rapprochement with EU. We are glad that we manage to inform Moldovans about what Europe means by such events,” he said.

Attending the event, Romanian Minister Delegate for Relations with Romanians from Abroad Dan Stoenescu noted that Romania would offer the children participating in the exhibition places in camps at the seaside  and  in mountains.

“I am glad to be with children from Moldova and celebrate together the Europe Day, a day which unites us in Europe. The Romanian government will provide camps to children winners of this competition. We will bring them to the seaside and mountains in Romania, so that they directly see what EU means”, Stoenescu said.

At a parliament plenary meeting, Andrian Candu conveyed a congratulatory message on Europe Day. Attending the event were the ambassadors of the diplomatic missions and international organizations from Moldova. Candu thanked, on behalf of the parliament, the ambassadors accredited to Moldova for the support offered by EU to Moldovan citizens.

“Europe Day is not only a holiday in the calendar, but it implies, first of all, much work, perseverance, patience, effort, understanding, hope – values needed to be found in the parliament’s plenum and certainly, in Moldova and worldwide. The founders who had dedication and vision 66 years ago and fulfilled that act with courage, at that time knew that significant efforts must be taken, so that peace and understanding should dominate on the European continent,” Candu added.

In the beginning of the meeting, the MPs and ambassadors watched a video spot about Moldovan citizens’ expectations from EU.

A light show will be organized starting from 21:00. The parliament’s building will be lighted up in the colors of the EU flag and Moldova's tricolour.
