Top European Bank to continue financing investment projects in Moldova

Chisinau, 20 May /MOLDPRES/ - Prime Minister Pavel Filip today had a meeting with new Head of the Office of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) in Moldova, Dmitri Gvindadze, the government’s communication and media relations department has reported.     

The officials discussed the results of the cooperation with the local EBRD team, investment programmes underway in the energy sector, business environment, roads’ infrastructure, sewerage and aqueducts systems, as well as the prospect for starting new projects. In this context, Pavel Filip stressed that the programmes carried out were meant to meet the needs of the business environment and citizens, and at the same time, highlighted the government’s policies in these sectors.     

Also, Prime Minister Pavel Filip referred to the usefulness of the support provided by EBRD to strengthen the Economic Council under the Prime Minister. He noted that the Council represented an important platform of discussions with the business environment in identifying the problems and solutions to overcome them.

“You have our every openness and I am sure that we will enjoy more investment projects and the government will provide every support in removing eventual difficulties in this respect,” Pavel Filip said.  

For his part, Dmitri Gvindadze said that the Bank would back the reforms initiated by the government to stabilize the macroeconomic situation by providing consultative support, technical assistance in developing policies and strengthening the Moldovan cabinet’s capacities in carrying out the reforms.  

The sides also discussed the projects due to be implemented in Moldova. In this context, Dmitri Gvindadze said that, if the government fulfilled all the commitments assumed, including the signing of a memorandum with IMF, then till late 2016, BERD, European Investment Bank would be willing to sign the agreement on financing the Ungheni-Chisinau gas pipeline worth about 90 million euros.    

As for the implementation of the project on interconnection of electricity lines on the segment Isaccea-Vulcanesti-Chisinau, with an overall budget of 140 million euros, the EBRD director confirmed the intention to provide 60 million euros.  

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) presently carries out 48 projects worth 0.5 billion euros.
