Chisinau, 23 May /MOLDPRES/ - President Nicolae Timofti received a delegation of the Group of the European People’s Party (EPP), on a study visit to Moldova, at the State Residence today.
At the meeting, President Timofti praised the constant support of the EPP Group of the European Parliament to promote the commitments taken by Moldova at the EU level. In this context, President Timofti thanked the EPP members for their contribution to facilitating the EU-Moldova dialogue, in order to liberalize the visa regime for the Moldovans. “This is the strongest argument in favour of backing our country on the European way in the aspiration of integration in the Great European family,” the president said.
The MEPs showed interest in the implementation of the reforms in the justice sector and fighting corruption, as these are the major concerns of the political group of the European People’s Party. From the viewpoint of the next autumn presidential elections, the sides voiced hope that the polls would take place in conditions of fairness and political pluralism. The European lawmakers displayed willingness to contribute to ensuring the carrying out of the elections in the spirit of objectiveness and correctness.
Asked what recommendations the president would give to his successor, Nicolae Timofti said that he/she must “strictly observe the country’s Constitution and work in the interests of the citizens.”
In the end of the meeting, the MEPs showed satisfaction for the sincere dialogue with the head of state, highlighting that Nicolae Timofti was the most faithful and honest promoter of the European cause in Moldova.
