German Bundestag to offer scholarships to Moldovan young people

Chisinau, 7 June /MOLDPRES/ - The German Bundestag (parliament) is going to offer scholarships to graduates of Moldovan higher education institutions in 2017 as well. The deputy head of Germany’s diplomatic mission in Moldova, PhD Thomas Weithöner made statements to this effect at a news conference today. 

The selected young people will have possibility to finish a five-month-long probation with a member of the German parliament, to thus take knowledge of the German legislative system and political decision processes in the parliamentary work sector.   

“This is a very important programme, which needs a very high qualification, with the programme’s goal being that young people leave for Germany and learn about the work of democratic institutions. At the same time, the young people will have possibility to go to lectures given at Berlin-based universities, and with the experience gained, they are expected at home to efficiently implement the assimilated knowledge, that would improve also the activity of the institutions from Moldova,” PhD. Thomas Weithöner said.   

The basic conditions for the persons willing to benefit from these scholarships are: a very good knowledge of German; holding the citizenship of Moldova; finished university education; general knowledge on the politics, society and history of Germany and being younger than 30.  

An independent commission of the German Bundestag will select the scholars. The programme lasts starting from 1 March till 31 July 2017. “The participants will receive a monthly scholarship of 500 euros. Additionally, the costs of insurance in case of disease, accidents and of civil responsibility for students, as well as the administrative taxes and the social insurances contributions will be taken over as well. Besides, free of charge accommodation is provided, or in case you have your own accommodation, a contribution worth 300 euros monthly will be offered. At the same time, the travels to and from Berlin will be returned,” PhD. Thomas Weithöner said.   

So far, over 2,200 students from 41 countries have benefitted from these scholarships. Moldova has been participating in this programme for more than ten years, during which over 20 students received these scholarships.
