Situation in southern Moldova under control

Chisinau, 15 June /MOLDPRES/ The emergencies situations commission from Gagauz-Yeri convened at a meeting on 14 June evening, in order to assess the situation in Ceadir-Lunga following the 13 June heavy rains.

The first deputy governor of the autonomy, Vadim Ceban ,informed that the situation was under control in the town. “Fortunately, there are no human casualties. Rescuers and firemen teams are working in the town, helped by carabineers troops. Thirty people were evacuated, being accommodated at the Gloria health centre from Ceadir-Lunga. During one day, we will unveil a report to the government, on the basis of which we will seek solutions to the problem on compensation of the damage caused by rains”, he said.

Ceadir-Lunga mayor Anatoli Topal said that the situation was changing each hour. “We already know about eight houses collapsed after heavy rains. Almost one hundred houses are flooded. At the same time, the town's infrastructure was seriously hit. Local roads have been badly destroyed. Over 1 million lei is needed to repair them. Two parks, the square and the stadium were flooded too”, he said.

The heavy rains damaged dozens of farms from the settlement, flooding plantations of barley, wheat, tobacco, sunflower, maize and peas. So far, over one hundred households have remained without gas, as they were disconnected urgently because of the danger.

Other services are operating as normal in the town. The local authorities launched an appeal for 17 June to all institutions, organizations and citizens from Ceadir-Lunga to attend public works of sanitation and arrangement of the territory.

Data by the State Hydro-meteorological Service show that, on 13 June evening, about 80 mm of rainfall was recorded during two hours at the Ceadir-Lunga-based meteorological observation station, which represents the norm for almost two months.
