European Commission official says Moldova priority for European Union

Chisinau, 15 June /MOLDPRES/ - The level of implementation of the Roadmap, legislation on integrity and fighting corruption, improving the financial and banking sector, ensuring the economic stability, the presidential polls due in next autumn, resumption of EU’s assistance for Moldova have been the main subjects tackled at a meeting between Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu and Director General for Enlargement at the European Commission Christian Danielsson.   

According to the parliament’s communication and public relations department, Andrian Candu punctually referred to measures undertaken by the National Bank of Moldova (BNM) to improve the situation at the five banks under supervision, including to the working out of the new legislation in the field concerning the legal instruments for systemic banking crises. In the context, the parliament speaker gave assurances about the parliament’s determination to provide the needed political support for a good work of BNM.  

Referring to the implementation of the Association Agreement, Speaker Andrian Candu said the parliament had become more active and involved in this process. “The recent setting up of the Parliamentary Council for European Integration was aimed at mobilizing the MPs to carry out the Association Agreement. We are set to fully use the mechanism of parliamentary control over the earlier passed laws following the association with EU,” the parliament speaker said.  

A special topic of the discussions was focused on the European Union’s development assistance for Moldova. Andrian Candu and Christian Danielsson exchanged opinions on the current evolutions in Moldova’s relation with the International Monetary Fund, pointing out, at the same time, the technical stages due to be covered for the resumption of EU’s assistance.

The officials also discussed the reform of public administration in Moldova, especially the authorities’ vision in this respect. Also, the Director General for Enlargement at the European Commission showed interest in mechanisms of civil society’s involvement in the parliamentary activity.

Also today in Brussels, Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu had a meeting with Chairman of the European Parliament Committee on Foreign Affairs Elmar Brok, within which the sides reviewed the social and political developments in Moldova.
