Moldovan special commission to supervise correctness of assessing damages of 18 June heavy rains

Chisinau, 21 June /MOLDPRES/ - The removing of the damages recorded in the wake of the heavy rains with strong wind and hail from 18-19 June, as well as the providing of the needed assistance to the people hit by the disaster were discussed at a today’s meeting of the commission for emergency situations, chaired by Prime Minister Pavel Filip.  Attending the event were also representatives of the central authorities and the heads of 12 districts affected by the bad weather, the government’s communication and media relations department has reported.  

The discussions were focused on improving the way the authorities, including the local ones, are acting in emergency situations. In the context, the prime minister demanded that the district heads and mayors prove more responsibility and promptly intervene during emergency situations. At the same time, Pavel Filip asked to permanently take into account warnings by the State Hydrometeorological Service and to observe the procedures of action in such situations.   

“The way we react to removing consequences, how we intervene with aid after the natural calamities is important, but we should also speak prevention measures. We must draw the needed conclusions and be prepared to cope with such situations. Warnings by the Hydrometeorological Service are not just news bulletins, but are also for you, the administration, so that we take the necessary measures. Elementarily, if it is about torrential rains, we must clean the sewage holes and the outlets canals; by carrying out these measures, many of the disasters can be prevented,” Pavel Filip said.   

At the same time, the PM asked to urgent carry out the assessment of the damage caused by the bad weather locally, especially the damages inflicted to the homes of the hit people. The prime minister warned the authorities to present sure and truthful reports. A commission for checking the results of assessing the damages caused by the natural calamities was set up to supervise the correctness of the data unveiled by the authorities.  

“So far, we should recognize, we do not have all information from areas. I make a request that, during 72 hours, you unveil all the data. We, the central authorities, need a correct, as well as absolutely real information, so that we know where we can intervene and with which materials,” the PM added.   

Data put out by the Civilian Protection and Emergency Situations Service shows that monthly norms of precipitation were recorded in some settlements on 18 June evening. Individual households, farmlands and houses were hit by the hail and strong wind in the central and northern Moldova. The ones from the districts of Ungheni, Soldanesti and Floresti were the worst hit ones.
