European Commission official encourages Moldovan authorities to sign agreement with IMF as soon as possible

Chisinau, 22 June /MOLDPRES/- Deputy Director General of the European Commission’s Directorate General for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Negotiations Katarína Mathernová, on visit to Chisinau, has encouraged the authorities to sign an agreement with the International Monetary Fund as quickly as possible and approach the deficiencies left in the banking and energy sectors, according to a press release by the European Union Delegation to Moldova.

‘’This agreement is necessary for the resumption of the financing of the budgetary support provided by EU,’’ the EU Delegation said.  

According to the communiqué, spread today, the deputy director general of the European Commission’s Directorate General for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Negotiations visited Chisinau on 20-21 June to discuss the progress of reforms in the key sectors, especially the banking one. Katarína Mathernová also had meetings with the government’s leadership, governor of the National Bank of Moldova and partners of international financial institutions.

The European official ‘’stressed the need of a truthful implementation of the reforms contained in the Roadmap on the priority reforms’ agenda. The structural reforms are needed for the good of the country and its citizens.’’    

EU has backed Moldova in the commitments taken concerning the reforms and implementation of the Association Agreement (including the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement) with assistance worth 221 million euros since the signing of the accord in 2014. The European Union’s assistance regards the key priorities, especially the public administration reform, agriculture and rural development, police reform and borders management.
