Moldovan politicians think UK Polling not to influence Moldova directly

Chisinau, 27 June. /MOLDPRES/ - The politicians of Moldova stick to the idea that the recent poll in Great Britain will not influence Moldova directly.  

Contacted by MOLDPRES, the honorary leader of the Democratic Party, Dumitru Diacov, has said that the Brexit results would be a problematic decision as to Great Britain, EU  institutions, so for the eastern area countries. “The EU countries are expected to focus on solving this issue, therefore, they have less time for the eastern zone problems, including Moldova. The decision will have an impact on the state of things in our country; yet, the situation depends on political stability and the perception of things”, said Diacov.

“If the UK ruled to leave EU, then it must do it quickly and without causing major problems both to the country and the EU. We are keeping an eye on the development of the situation. I do not think we will be affected directly and immediately. There is no need to panic, but to work for development of Moldova, fight corruption and continue the European integration,” said the chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova (PLDM), Viorel Cibotaru.

For his part, Liberal Party (PL) MP, Lilian Carp, said that the EU was to take note of this decision. “We should also take into account the fact that the English Parliament can reject the polling results. Nevertheless, leaving the EU will be a long-lasting process. Moldova will not be an EU member, so it could only indirectly affect it by means of people who have both the citizenship of Moldova and EU, in terms of the employment or other points; yet, here everything depends upon the negotiation process between Britain and EU.”

“EU countries must be consolidated, draw conclusions based on earlier mistakes, and for Moldova it is important that it press ahead with the European modernization. It is regrettable that some politicians are happy with this British people’s decision, especially as hundreds of thousands of Moldovans are temporarily or permanently staying in the EU and some of the problems will have repercussions on them too,” said a Social Democratic Platform for Moldova (PSDM) member, Artur Resetnikov.

The Party of Socialists (PSRM) leader, Igor Dodon, specified that Brexit meant the beginning of the EU’s end. “For the European countries, their own sovereignty, preserving their traditions and national interests become more important than the temporary economic benefits brought by the Schengen Area. Moldova does not have to run after a detaching train which loses its carriages, but we have to learn to develop with our own forces,” said Dodon.

On 23 June, a referendum on whether to remain or leave the EU took place in the United Kingdom. According to the results, 51.9% of the voters preferred Brexit to EU.
