Chisinau, 27 June /MOLDPRES/ - The Brexit has not affected the exchange rates of the Moldovan leu against the U.S. dollar and the Euro in Moldova, an economic expert of the Viitorul (Future) Institute for Development and Social Initiatives, Veaceslav Ionita, today told MOLDPRES.
“What we have noticed is the depreciation of the pound against the Moldovan leu. Yet, the number of Moldovan citizens having English pounds is too small,” Ionita noted.
Another Viitorul expert, Sergiu Gaibu, said that, in the wake of the Brexit and uncertainties as to the economic impact of this event, the Euro had lost 2.6 per cent to the dollar. This was also mirrored in the development of the Moldovan leu’s exchange rate against the European currency. Thus, the Euro lost ground, dropping from 22.5 to 21.85 lei for one euro, Gaibu also said.
According to the exchange rate set by the National Bank of Moldova (BNM), the UK pound will depreciate by 0.9 lei against the national currency on 28 June, reaching 26.20 lei. On 23 June, the day of the British referendum, the pound was sold against 28.98 lei.
The Euro is significantly depreciating too. On 28 June, it will cost 21.84 lei, by 0.16 lei less than today.
At the same time, the American dollar gains ground, getting dearer by 0.03 lei up to 19.84 lei.
