Moldovan president receives delegation of Parliamentary Assembly of Council of Europe

Chisinau, 29 June /MOLDPRES/ - President Nicolae Timofti had a meeting with a delegation of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), led by co-rapporteur Ögmundur Jonasson, on a monitoring visit to Moldova, at the State Residence today, the presidential press service has reported.
The sides exchanged opinions on the implementation of reforms in Moldova and recent amendments made to the normative framework on the way the head of state is elected.
In the context, President Nicolae Timofti said the election of the president by direct voting directly met the expectations of the residents. He also said that, in case of the Fundamental Law’s amendment, possibility to revise the prerogatives of the Moldovan president should be taken into account.
Referring to the observance of human rights in Moldova, the head of state reiterated that they were glaringly violated by the Transnistrian authorities. The president touched upon the free movement, education in the native language, farmers’ access to their lands. “The deliberate maintenance of the present situation is not in the interest of Moldova and the residents from both banks of Dniester,” Nicolae Timofti said.
The sides tackled also issues of quality of justice in Moldova, which affect both citizens and Moldova’s image. Co-rapporteur Jonasson welcomed President Timofti’s firm message backing an independent and professional judicial system.
