Moldovan premier meets members of American Jewish Committee

Chisinau, 11 July /MOLDPRES/ - Prime Minister Pavel Filip today had a meeting with a delegation of the American Jewish Committee (AJC), led by David Harris, the government’s communication and media relations department has reported.  

In the beginning of the meeting, the PM congratulated David Harris on the awarding of Moldova’s Order of Honour. He highlighted the dynamic on the rise of the cooperation between Moldova and AJC, as well as the active role of the Jewish community in facilitating the Moldova – United States dialogue. Also, the prime minister congratulated the American Jewish Committee on the occasion of the marking of the 110th anniversary of this organisation’s foundation in 2016.    

”Moldova is a state with a rich cultural diversity; namely for this reason, we need a tolerant society. We have already a legislative framework which ensures the protection of minorities’ rights, and the policies promoted by the government are aimed at promoting tolerance and removing all forms of discrimination. At the same time, we are open for boosting the dialogue with all groups of national minorities, including the Jewish Community, in order to implement programmes of strengthening the society and social and economic development,” Pavel Filip said.    

For his part, the head of the delegation of the American Jewish Committee, David Harris, congratulated the Moldovan people on the 25th anniversary of proclamation of Independence, due to be marked on 27 August 2016, as well as on the occasion of the full entrance into force of the Moldova-EU Association Agreement.

The PM also reviewed the cabinet’s priorities in the relations with the foreign partners, including the United States and Israel. Filip stressed that the reforms underway were aimed at turning Moldova into a stable, safe and open state for foreign investors. In the context, Prime Minister Pavel Filip reiterated the firm determination to continue Moldova’s European integration, as well as promoting an advantageous partnership with all development partners.

At the same time, the officials of the American Jewish Committee showed openness for providing support to Moldova, stressing that the state has potential of development and of transforming challenges into opportunities.   

Among the subjects discussed, there were also the possibility to open a museum of Jewish identity and Holocaust in Chisinau and returning the properties which belonged to the Jewish religious communities or national minorities.

The Jewish Community of Moldova is made up of about 25,000 people, most of  whom live in Chisinau. The national Holocaust victims’ remembrance days is annually marked in Moldova on 27 January.
