New Swedish Government-financed project for backing parliament to be implemented by UNDP Moldova

Chisinau, July 12 /MOLDPRES/ – A technical support programme to enhance efficient administration will be implemented in parliament in July 2016 – December 2019, in order to speed up the Association Agreement's enforcement, adjust the national legislation to the European one, enhance the parliament’s efficiency and transparency, as well as promote gender equality, the parliament's communication and public relations department has reported.
The new programme for the institutional development of the Moldovan parliament, totaling about 4.3 million dollars, is funded by the Swedish government and will be implemented with the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Moldova. The project's goals are to provide support to parliament in the implementation of the Association Agreement and the Association Agenda, increase transparency of the institution, strengthen the institutional capacities to improve the legislative function, the parliamentary control function and the one of parliament's representation.
Attending the ceremony on signing the framework document of the project “Strengthening Parliamentary Governance in Moldova” were Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Sweden to Moldova Signe Burgstaller, United Nations Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Moldova Dafina Gherceva.
Speaker Candu thanked the Embassy of Sweden, the Swedish Government, UNDP and other development partners for their support in parliamentary development and institutional capacity building.
“This project is the first to come for the Moldovan parliament and a new page in cooperation between the Moldovan parliament, UNDP and the government of Sweden. I hope it bodes well for many nice actions and with impact for consolidating the parliament's institutional capacities, so that the legislature becomes the best organized institution of the country,” said Andrian Candu.
“The new project fits into UNDP's objective to strengthen parliament as an institution. The purpose of parliamentary assistance in Moldova is to back the Parliament in implementing its representative, legislative and control duties democratically, transparently and efficiently, which will lead to gaining citizens' trust,” UN Resident Coordinator, UNDP Resident Representative in Moldova Daina Gercheva said.
“The development of this project is the result of efforts of the sides involved in our common goal to strengthen the institutional capacities of parliament and align the legislative institution with the European standards of good governance”, said Ambassador of Sweden to Moldova Signe Burgstaller.
