Prosecutors appeal verdict in case of Moldovan ex-premier

Chisinau, 13 July /MOLDPRES/ - The Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office today appealed the sentence of the Buiucani district court of Chisinau, under which the former PM, Vlad Filat, was sentenced to nine years of imprisonment, the Prosecutor General’s Office (PG) informed today.
The prosecutors who demanded sentencing the former prime minister to 19 years of imprisonment, described the ruling of the first instance court as “too mild in comparison with the illegal actions of the defendant, who harmed the interests of the citizens and the state in very large amount, and insist on applying a more severe punishment against him,” reads a PG press release.
Two weeks ago, the Buiucani court sentenced Filat to tine years of imprisonment, with a fine of 60,000 lei and depriving him of the right to hold public offices during five years, withdrawal of the state distinction Order of the Republic and confiscation of more assets, among which houses, plots of land and vehicles.
“The verdict was pronounced after prosecutors had proved the guilt of the former PM of committing influence peddling and passive corruption in the file on Banca de Economii (Savings Bank) frauds,” the PG communiqué also reads.
Vlad Filat was detained on 15 October 2015, based on a self-denunciation by business man Ilan Shor. The latter said he had bribed Filat with 250 million dollars, with the charges turned down by Vlad Filat. Filat has been in preventive detention for almost nine months.
